Although it has not yet disclosed exact figures, the Iowa State Patrol has confirmed several tornado-related deaths and at least a dozen storm-related injuries on Tuesday.
“We do have confirmed fatalities,” Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla said Tuesday night. He said authorities were still determining the total number.
Strong storms that swept throughout the Midwest produced a number of tornadoes, one of which tore through the tiny Iowan town of Greenfield, which is roughly 2,000 people, 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines.
The tornado left behind a desolate scene of torn-down houses and shops, windmills ripped from the ground, torn-up trees, wrecked cars, and widely scattered debris.
This is a developing story.
