TAMPA, Fla. – A chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles occurred Tuesday morning on the Selom, Expressway (SR-618) west of 21st Street. The incident was triggered by a medical emergency experienced by the driver of a Ford F150 pickup truck.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the F150, traveling westbound, involuntarily accelerated due to the driver’s medical condition.
It collided with a Toyota Tacoma and a Nissan Armada, both traveling ahead of it, in quick succession.

The F150 then veered into the median, striking a guardrail and ultimately coming to rest after hitting a structural support for the upper deck of the Selmon Expressway. During the impact, a tire from the F150 detached, crossed into the eastbound lanes, and collided with a Volkswagen Jetta.
The drivers of the Tacoma, Armada, and Jetta were able to bring their vehicles to a controlled stop. Passengers in the Armada and Jetta were also unharmed.
The driver of the F150, a 54-year-old Lutz man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The FHP is currently investigating the incident and urges any witnesses to come forward with information.
