MSNBC senior contributor Mike Barnicle raged at former President Barack Obama and other prominent Democrats Friday for attempting to throw President Joe Biden out of the 2024 presidential race.
Obama has reportedly raised concerns about Biden’s chances of winning the election, telling other Democrats that the president’s odds of winning have greatly diminished and that he should reconsider his candidacy, according to The Washington Post. Barnicle said Obama and the Democrats are cruelly embarrassing Biden behind the scenes by leaking their private conversations to the public.
“You know, I think they are where a lot of people might be,” Barnicle said. “Looking at the level of cruelty that is involved in politics today. Here’s a man that has given 50 years of his life to the Democratic Party and the country. Here’s a man, who in 2008, was quite substantial in Barack Obama getting elected, and I’d hope President Obama had shared his misgivings about Joe Biden’s chances this fall with him personally over the phone, rather than having this political death by a thousand leaks every single day.”

“I mean, this is like a large family. The Biden family of politics gathered together,” Barnicle continued. “That’s his family, that’s what he’s devoted his life to, that’s who he’s helped day to day to day for over 50 years, whether on the ballot or off the ballot. And now, they’re basically telling him okay, old man, you can’t sit at the head of the table on Thanksgiving Day. They basically want to throw him out. I mean, you can withdraw, but trying to get someone to withdraw after stripping them of humility, of going after them, of going after him, and embarrassing him in public with all these leaks. I think they’re angry about it, the reality of it I’m sure has struck home to them. But still, it’s appalling.”
The Biden campaign reportedly believes Obama is working “behind the scenes” to “orchestrate” the push for the president to step down, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough asserted during a July 11 “Morning Joe” segment.
Many Democrats have become fearful that Biden lacks the ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November, leading at least 21 prominent Democrats to publicly call for the president to step out of the race. Democratic Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett became the first congressional member to oppose Biden’s reelection bid, followed by Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton, California Rep. Adam Schiff, New York Rep. Pat Ryan and Montana Sen. Jon Tester.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly “made the case” for Biden to withdraw from the race Saturday during a private one-on-one phone call with the president. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has also reportedly expressed similar concerns about Biden behind the scenes.
The former president leads Biden nationally at 52% to 47% as of Thursday, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. Trump also takes the lead in a head-to-head matchup with Vice President Kamala Harris at 51% to 48%.
The CBS News/YouGov poll surveyed 2,247 registered voters between July 16 and 18, with a 2.7% margin of error.
