Mother And Son Rescued In Weeki Wachee Preserve After Becoming Lost

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A mom and her son, who became lost in a preserve, were located by a drone deputy in Hernando County.

On Friday, May 12, at approximately 2:24 p.m., Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Linda Pedersen Park, located at 6300 Shoal Line Boulevard in Hernando Beach, about a citizen assist.

According to dispatchers, a mother and 17-year-old son called 911 after becoming lost while walking in the Weeki Wachee Preserve.

The pair told dispatchers they had little water and minimal cell phone battery.

Upon arrival, a deputy proceeded to launch a drone to locate the lost individuals.

After approximately 30 minutes, the deputy located the pair walking on a trail about 4,000 feet from where the deputy launched his drone.

The deputy noted the mother and son were walking and did not appear to be in any distress.

The drone deputy immediately provided coordinates to other deputies in proximity to the lost individuals.

The deputies entered the preserve and were able to locate the mother and her son. Deputies proceeded to transport the mother and son out of the preserve. Both individuals refused medical treatment.

Once back at their vehicle, the mother and son thanked the deputies for their assistance.
