Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Warns Of New Scam Targeting Recent Arrestees

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a new scam where criminals are using the Sheriff’s Office mugshot webpage to target recent arrestees.

Posing as deputies, the scammers contact victims and lie about their case status in an attempt to extort money.

MCSO reminds residents law enforcement and other legitimate organizations will never ask for payment via gift cards or Bitcoin.

If you receive a suspicious call or message claiming to be from law enforcement or any organization, contact that organization directly to verify.

If you get a text from a loved one urgently asking for money, contact them directly to confirm before sending anything.
