MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has begun efforts to clear a homeless encampment on 20th Street in Marathon. The action comes at the request of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the property owner.
“The property owner — FDOT — has asked us for help in this area of Marathon where many homeless campers have been congregating,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “We will honor that request in a way that is legal, efficient, and humane.”

The Sheriff’s Office will provide a 48-hour notice to vacate to all individuals currently camping on the property. Along with the notice, campers will receive informational pamphlets and materials containing contact information for available resources.
Following the initial clearing of the encampment, the Sheriff’s Office will increase patrols in the area. They will also collaborate with local and state government agencies and community partners to maintain the area clear, pending further direction from FDOT.
