In a major upset for the beer industry, Modelo Especial has officially dethroned Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the United States. Recent data from NielsenIQ, provided to FOX Business by Bump Williams Consulting, reveals that Modelo now holds an 8.4% share of total beer sales in the U.S. for the year-to-date, edging out Bud Light at 8.2%.
This marks a significant shift in the beer market, as Bud Light had held the title for 22 consecutive years. The decline in Bud Light’s sales can be attributed to several factors, including a consumer boycott following a controversial partnership with a transgender influencer, Dylan Mulvaney.
Meanwhile, Modelo’s popularity has steadily risen, thanks in part to the growing Hispanic drinking-age population and a trend towards premiumization in the beer industry.
The Mexican lager’s consistent growth and strategic marketing efforts have finally paid off, positioning it as the new king of beers in the U.S.
While this is undoubtedly a major victory for Modelo, experts predict that the competition between the two brands will remain fierce.

It remains to be seen whether Bud Light can regain its former dominance or if Modelo will solidify its position at the top. Regardless, this shift in the beer landscape is a significant development that will undoubtedly shape the future of the industry.
