Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has called on Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray to immediately halt the alleged destruction of records by their agencies and preserve all documents in anticipation of upcoming congressional investigations.

In a strongly worded letter, Hawley condemned what he described as widespread misconduct under their leadership, including targeting President-elect Donald Trump, pro-life advocates, and Catholic communities.

“With sunlight now on the horizon, I’m not surprised by last-ditch efforts to stonewall the incoming administration. But those efforts will fail,” Senator Hawley wrote.

Hawley, who will chair a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee in the forthcoming Congress, pledged to investigate the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for alleged abuses during the Biden administration.

He cited several concerns, including the prosecution of Trump, legal actions against pro-life protesters, and alleged attempts to recruit informants in Catholic parishes.

“This is a sordid track record, and the American people deserve the truth about how it happened and who was involved,” Hawley stated.

In his letter, Hawley demanded that Garland and Wray take immediate action to:

  1. Halt the destruction of documents: Hawley claimed reports indicated that DOJ and FBI personnel were destroying records to evade scrutiny.
  2. Preserve all materials: He called for the preservation of all documents and records created during Garland and Wray’s tenures.
  3. Hold personnel accountable: Hawley insisted that any employees involved in document destruction should face termination.

“If your staff are presently destroying relevant documents, then the American people will learn about that too, and will learn who gave the orders to do so,” Hawley warned.

Hawley framed the investigations as a step toward restoring accountability and trust in the justice system. “The bottom line is this: you must immediately take all necessary steps to preserve all documents, records, and other materials. You must cease any bad-faith document destruction. And you should prepare for the real justice to come.”

The letter signals heightened scrutiny of the DOJ and FBI as the new Congress takes shape. Hawley’s forthcoming role as a Subcommittee Chair will place him in a position to lead investigations into the alleged abuses and demand answers from the agencies.

Neither Garland nor Wray has publicly responded to Hawley’s letter as of this publication.
