Republican Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt bashed CNN to host Kate Bolduan’s face over their coverage of Republican nominee Donald Trump’s rhetoric one day before the 2024 election.
The network aired a clip of Trump joking that he would not mind a bullet shooting through the “fake news” reporters in the crowd during a Sunday rally in Pennsylvania. Schmitt accused the network of creating a “fake outrage” over the former president’s rhetoric because Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has “nothing to run on.”

“Well I just think it’s interesting … everyday, you try to create some sort of foe outrage and I understand why, because Kamala Harris has called President Trump a fascist, Joe Biden has called half of America garbage, and they have nothing to run on,” Schmitt said. “And so every day we find something, you guys try to blow up into something that quite frankly no one takes literally. I can’t believe you spend so much time on it on the air, but I know why — because President Trump has the momentum in this race. It’s a change election cycle, President Trump by 2-to-1 margins is seen as the change candidate. That’s a hard reality for some people to accept, but that’s what people are focused on, not these clips that you seem to air everyday.”
Bolduan said there are many Republicans who are unhappy with Trump’s rhetoric and that the former president should understand better than anyone that “heated rhetoric” is dangerous, since he is the victim of two assassination attempts.
“I’m just asking you, are you okay with [Trump] saying that, would you like him to continue to repeat that today as part of your final message?” Bolduan asked.

“It’s really interesting. So President Trump, he’s had two assassination attempts on his life and you don’t really talk about that anymore and if it were Kamala Harris, NBC Nightly News would be camped out in Butler [Pennsylvania], but it’s not convenient to humanize President Trump. I have spent a lot of time with him this weekend, his message is very clear: Kamala Harris broke it, we’re gonna fix it. So again, you can pull up all the clips over 4 years, or even 8 years now, the idea to try to marginalize him and his supporters has been ongoing … Every time you try to pull up a clip like this to create outrage, people see through it now, they really do … This is insane.”
Schmitt further argued people are not safe in their communities due to a surge in illegal immigration, an influx of fentanyl crossing into the U.S. by the drug cartels, and a rise in violent crime.

Several media outlets accused Trump of calling for Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney to be executed by a “firing squad” after he stated that she would change her mind on being a “war hawk” if she were placed with a “rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her.” The former president’s campaign came under fire for comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage” during an Oct. 27 rally at Madison Square Garden, prompting President Joe Biden to label Trump supporters as “garbage.”
