A Missouri woman is accused of killing her 8-year-old son with a tablecloth, according to police, and leaving his lifeless body in the car for several hours while she ran errands.

According to Miami-Dade Police officials on Thursday, Shaneka Ann McKinzie, 36, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 8-year-old son, Jaisyn Burgos.

NBC 6 reported that McKinzie took Burgos to Hialeah Hospital on Tuesday night, according to the police. At the hospital, the unconscious child was declared dead.

Police say a medical examiner’s autopsy revealed that he had been strangled to death.

Investigators say McKinzie later admitted to them that she had been planning to kill her son for the preceding two days.

He was dozing off in the back passenger seat of her car when she used a tablecloth to choke and suffocate him until he passed out, according to the police.

After that, McKinzie took her son’s body in the car and drove around while running errands.

“It’s very difficult to wrap your head around how a parent could not only plan to murder their child but then after carrying out this murder go on about their day as if nothing happened,” Miami-Dade Police Det. Andre Martin told NBC 6. “To drive around with their child’s lifeless body and complete various errands as if nothing ever happened. It’s unimaginable.”

McKinzie was assigned a public defender and given an order to be held without bond during her court appearance on Thursday.

According to the police, McKinzie is homeless and moved from Missouri to South Florida with her son last year. They were staying at different hotels, and the child wasn’t attending school.

Burgos’ father passed away a few years ago, according to family members and officials.
