U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) have introduced a resolution to designate August 1, 2024, as Gold Star Children’s Day, recognizing the sacrifices made by the children of fallen service members.
The Gold Star tradition, which began over a century ago, honors the families of military personnel who have died in service to the United States. Nearly 5,500 Mississippians have made the ultimate sacrifice from World War I to the present, resulting in approximately 10,000 Gold Star Children over the past 100 years.
“The sons and daughters of our fallen service members carry on their legacy. Recognizing them with this special day is the least we can do to honor the lifelong sacrifice they made,” said Senator Wicker.

“West Virginians and Americans are forever grateful to the brave patriots and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the country we all love,” said Senator Manchin. “No child should ever have to grow up without a parent, and I cannot imagine the pain of losing a loved one in the line of duty. I am proud that our bipartisan resolution designating August 1st, 2024, as Gold Star Children’s Day has passed the Senate to honor their dedication and sacrifice to the nation we all love so dearly. I extend my deepest condolences and utmost gratitude to every Gold Star family and child.”
The resolution aims to provide a day of recognition for the children who endure the profound loss of a parent in military service, acknowledging their courage and resilience. It serves as a reminder of the personal costs of war and the enduring impact on the families left behind.
Gold Star Children’s Day will be observed annually, offering a moment for communities across the nation to honor these young individuals and the legacies of their fallen parents.
