Democratic congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota has decided to suspend his campaign for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
After failing to gain significant support, Phillips made the decision to endorse President Biden, citing the clear choice between Biden and Trump, calling the former president the “dangerous” alternative.
Phillips, a three-term congressman, launched his presidential campaign in October with the intention of challenging President Biden.

Phillips believed that Biden would not be able to defeat former President Donald Trump in the general election and saw it as his duty to step up and offer an alternative. He expressed his concerns about the future of the United States and stated that he would not sit still in the face of an impending emergency.
Phillips made the decision to suspend his presidential campaign and endorse President Biden. In an interview with a Minnesota radio show, Phillips emphasized the clarity of the choice between Biden and Trump.
He referred to Trump as a “dangerous, dangerous man” and urged supporters of Haley and Trump to unify behind decency and integrity by supporting Joe Biden. Phillips stated that he would do everything possible to ensure Biden’s re-election because he believed it was an existential necessity.
Phillips questioned Joe Biden’s decision to run for president again during his campaign, particularly due to his age.

Phillips stated that Biden should have passed the torch and expressed concerns about his ability to connect with the new generation of elected officials.
However, despite his reservations, Phillips acknowledged that Biden was a good man and emphasized that he would not demean or undermine him.
With the suspension of his presidential campaign and Biden’s endorsement, Phillips’ political future remains uncertain. Prior to entering the presidential race, Phillips had announced that he would not seek re-election to his House seat representing Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District.
It is unclear what Phillips’ next steps will be, but his decision to drop out of the presidential race opens up opportunities for other candidates in the Democratic Party.
