Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz acknowledged in a CNN interview that Democrats may have erred in their support of Joe Biden’s 2024 presidential candidacy, suggesting Biden was not “up to the task.”

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Walz spoke about the Democratic Party’s need to learn from its “lessons” in the 2024 election cycle, particularly in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s victory.

CNN host Jake Tapper directly questioned Walz, asking, “Don’t you think your party needs to acknowledge that President Biden was not up for the job of running for re-election, and that this was a major mistake? You all went along with the idea that he was up for it and he wasn’t, and everybody saw it. And the country rejected it.”

Walz responded, “History will tell us to go back on that. That very well could be the case, Jake. What I’m concerned about is learning from those lessons. I would hope we would never do it again, make a mistake, make sure we go through and get someone. But I don’t know where it helps us going forward.”

In the same interview, Walz also stated that the Democratic Party allowed the Republican Party to control the narrative on issues such as illegal immigration, “food insecurity,” and racial income disparities.

The article references criticism of Biden’s performance in a presidential debate against Trump, which CNN hosted in June 2024. Biden subsequently withdrew from the race in July 2024 following calls from within his own party for him to step aside.

The context of the discussion is the Democratic Party’s current struggle with low approval ratings, citing a March 16 CNN poll that showed the party’s favorability rating at a record low of 29%.
