A 45-year-old Iron River man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge, announced the sentencing of Matthew Joseph Sheehan, who was arrested in June 2023 following a traffic stop in Iron County.

Court records show that investigators had been tracking Sheehan’s activities, which involved traveling out of state to obtain methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine for distribution in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

During the traffic stop, officers discovered nearly a pound of methamphetamine, a smaller amount of cocaine, and over $6,000 in cash in Sheehan’s possession.

A subsequent search of his residence yielded additional drugs and more than $37,000.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Michigan State Police, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Iron River Police Department, and Iron County Sheriff’s Office.
