Darius Nance, 33, of Redford, was arraigned in the 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills on charges of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Nance faces one count of Embezzlement from a Vulnerable Adult (his grandfather) – $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, which carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 or three times the value of the embezzled funds, whichever is greater.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Attorney General’s office, which revealed that after Nance’s grandfather was admitted to the SKLD Bloomfield Hills nursing facility in October 2022, Nance was appointed as his guardian by the Oakland County Probate Court on February 22, 2023. It is alleged that Nance neglected to make payments to the nursing facility for his grandfather’s care after taking on guardianship and instead diverted funds from his grandfather’s account for his own business dealings.

“Court-appointed guardians have a critical duty to safeguard our most vulnerable citizens,” Attorney General Nessel said. “We will continue to hold those accountable who exploit their guardianship roles for personal gain.”

Nance is scheduled to appear again in court for a probable cause conference on September 3, with a preliminary examination set for September 9.

The case is being handled by the Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Division (HCFD), Michigan’s federally certified Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The division receives 75% of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, totaling $5,541,992 for fiscal year 2024, with the remaining 25%—$1,847,326—funded by the State of Michigan.
