A 34-year-old Michigan man, Darren Dawson, has been charged with torture, unlawful imprisonment, and larceny after allegedly holding a 58-year-old woman hostage in his apartment for six months.
According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Dawson kept the victim confined to a closet from November 2023 to April, during which time he allegedly tortured her and stole her Social Security benefits and food stamps.

“The victim endured unimaginable suffering in what can only be described as a living nightmare. Our office is committed to seeking justice for her, and we will pursue every avenue to ensure this individual is held fully accountable for the alleged crimes committed,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Dawson faces serious charges, including torture, which carries a potential life sentence if convicted. He is currently being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $1 million bond.
If released, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor and is prohibited from contacting the victim or possessing any firearms.
