A caseworker assisting refugees in Michigan was hospitalized Wednesday after being repeatedly stabbed by an Afghan refugee, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Red Root Road near E. Silverbell and Kern roads, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Deputies received a 911 call around midday reporting the stabbing. Upon arrival, they found the victim, a caseworker employed by a company that assists refugees, suffering from multiple stab wounds. The suspect, identified as an Afghan refugee, had fled the scene in his vehicle but was later apprehended by authorities.

The victim was rushed into surgery with “very serious” injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office. As of Wednesday evening, there was no update on their condition.

The Afghan refugee is currently in custody, and officials have assured the public that there is no ongoing danger to the community. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. The identities of both the victim and suspect have not been released.

This stabbing comes on the heels of another violent incident involving a law enforcement officer. Just two days prior, a Border Patrol agent was fatally shot during a traffic stop in northern Vermont. That incident is also under investigation.

The attack has left the local community reeling, particularly those involved in refugee resettlement efforts. The incident raises questions about the vetting process for refugees and the potential risks faced by those working to assist them.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the stabbing and is expected to release more information as it becomes available.
