McConnell Dangles Committee Chairmanship And Being “Comfortable” In Front Of Manchin, Urging Break From Democrats

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is no longer being coy about the possible flipping of Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.

In recent interviews, the Kentucky Republican has said Manchin, of West Virginia, could likely keep his post as chairman of the Senate Energy Committee if he swaps parties and aids the GOP in becoming the majority.

McConnell also told reporters that he believes Manchin would be “more comfortable” as a Republican.

On Wednesday, The Washington Times reported that McConnell told conservative talk-radio host Hugh Hewitt that he has been after Manchin for some time.

“I think what Manchin is discovering is that there just aren’t any Democrats left in the Senate that are pro-life and terribly concerned about debt and deficit and inflation,” McConnell told Hewitt. “So he feels like a man alone. If he were to join us, he’d be joining a lot of folks who have similar views on a whole range of issues.”

McConnell also noted, “He, I’m sure, enjoys being chair of the committee. It’s important to West Virginia. And all of those things are things we’ve discussed.”

In an interview with The New York Times, McConnell said he was bewildered by how vicious Democrats reacted toward Manchin after he announced Sunday that he would not vote for President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill.

“Why in the world would they want to call him a liar and try to hotbox him and embarrass him?” McConnell said.

“I think the message is, ‘We don’t want you around.’

Obviously, that is up to Joe Manchin, but he is clearly not welcome on that side of the aisle.”

McConnell added, “Obviously, we would love to have him on our team… I think he’d be more comfortable.”
