The Florida Forest Service (FFS) has provided an update on the ongoing “344 Fire” in South Miami-Dade County, which has now consumed approximately 24,000 acres and is 30 percent contained. Officials are urging drivers to avoid U.S. 1 in the affected area due to heavy smoke and emergency response activity.

The fire, which has been burning for eight days, has prompted the closure of Card Sound Road and U.S. 1. Firefighters from the Florida Forest Service and partner agencies have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Currently, the FFS has 27 personnel on scene, supported by multiple engines, tractors, bulldozers, three helicopters, and two fixed-wing airplanes. Strike teams from North and Central Florida are also en route to assist. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service have also deployed personnel and heavy equipment, including tanker aircraft. Fire retardant has been utilized to protect critical infrastructure in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of South and Central Florida due to strong winds and low humidity, creating conditions that can rapidly spread wildfires.

The Florida Forest Service is urging residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid outdoor burning.
  • Do not discard cigarettes on the ground.
  • Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
  • Report smoke or fire immediately to 911 or the Florida Forest Service Field Unit in your area.

The FFS is continuing its efforts to contain the fire, and further updates will be provided as they become available. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow all safety recommendations.
