A 72-year-old Massachusetts man died Wednesday after he was pulled from the water on Alligator Reef off Islamorada.
Mark J. Gosciminski of South Easton, Massachusetts, was pronounced dead at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier.
Gosciminski was attempting to swim to a vessel at approximately 9:45 a.m. when he reportedly began to struggle. The U.S. Coast Guard responded as well as a U.S. Navy helicopter, which flew Gosciminski to the hospital.

There were no signs of foul play, according to deputies.

A 61-year-old Massachusetts man died following a snorkeling incident on March 5, 2023 on Alligator Reef off Islamorada, according to deputies.
Patrick Alan Martinec of North Weymouth, was snorkeling with Sundance Watersports when he began signaling for help in the water at approximately 2:20 p.m.
Deputies say the man was brought back to the vessel, where the crew began CPR and took him ashore.

Martinec was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he was pronounced dead.
Foul play is not expected to be a factor in the investigation. Autopsy results are pending.
