A Maryland man, Steven McSwain, 47, was arrested in Bunnell, Flagler County, on charges of Domestic Battery by Strangulation, Kidnapping, and Tampering with a Victim following a violent altercation with his girlfriend.

On September 5th, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance and found the victim at a neighbor’s residence, visibly distressed and showing signs of assault.

The victim recounted a disagreement with McSwain, her boyfriend of one month, which escalated when she asked him to leave.

McSwain allegedly attacked her, choking her, throwing her to the ground, and repeatedly banging her head on the floor. He also reportedly prevented her from calling for help by taking her phone and unplugging a smart device.

The victim eventually managed to escape through a bathroom window and contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

McSwain had fled the scene but was later apprehended at a nearby Dollar General. He is currently held at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a $75,000 bond.

“There’s nowhere to run if you’re a criminal in Flagler County, and our deputies didn’t stop until this guy was checked in at the Green Roof Inn,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We expect everyone to respect others, whether you’re from out of state or call Flagler County home your whole life. We will never accept violent crime in Flager County and have a zero tolerance for domestic violence.”
