MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. – The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent surge in mail theft and check fraud. Thieves have been stealing bags of mail dropped off at local post offices, altering checks, and cashing them for thousands of dollars.
Victims Targeted in Hobe Sound, Palm City, and Stuart
So far, 11 victims have reported having their checks stolen and altered after mailing them at post offices in Hobe Sound, Palm City, and Stuart.
Check Your Bank Accounts and Notify Authorities

If you’ve recently mailed checks, the Sheriff’s Office urges you to immediately check your bank accounts to ensure your payments were received. If checks were cashed but the intended recipients didn’t receive payment, contact your bank and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Additionally, if you mailed anything important and are concerned it didn’t reach its destination, contact the recipient to confirm its arrival.
