Republican lawmakers will come together on January 3rd and choose the next Speaker of the House.
The Speaker of the House is, by law, second in line to succeed the President, after the Vice President, and 25th Amendment makes the Speaker a part of the process announcing presidential disability.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was nominated by House Republicans to serve as Speaker of the House when the new session of Congress starts in January. But not with opposition.
In an opinion piece on Wednesday, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz opposed McCarthy, calling him “Cavin’ McCarthy.”
“The McCarthy camp is spinning that Kevin must be accepted because “we have to avoid chaos.” Chaos for who exactly? The special interests that are counting on McCarthy as their lapdog? I’m worried about chaos in the lives of my constituents. They live under the chaos of vaccine mandates pushed by Kevin’s donors.”
“Some conservatives are using this fact to convince themselves that he is the right leader for the moment, as McCarthy is so weak he’ll promise anything to anyone,” said Gaetz. “As his mentor recently confessed, “He lies. He’ll change the lie if necessary.” McCarthy doesn’t just respond to pressure from the Right. During several important junctures in the past decade, we’ve seen Cavin’ McCarthy,” Gaetz said.
“On Ukraine, McCarthy voted yes for the $40 billion Ukraine aid package in May. He even pushed the Biden administration to further escalate conflict with Russia as he called for fighter jets to be transferred to Ukraine. During the Obama administration, McCarthy called for a no-fly zone to be enforced in Syria while the Russian military was operating there,” Gaetz added.
“McCarthy knows he will end up failing Republicans and caving to liberals. That’s why he opposes reinstating the motion to vacate, which was in place from 1801 to 2018. He wants to make sure conservative congressmen can’t fix the problem once it’s too late,” Gaetz concluded.
Also penning an opinion piece on Wednesday, Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said in part, “Our job is to serve the American people, and we must do whatever it takes to get that job done.”
“As I talk to my friends and family, and visit with many others back home, I am keenly aware they are expecting Republicans to do miracles. They want us to fix all the problems created by the Democrats and stop the madness destroying our country,” said Greene. “But Republicans aren’t going to be performing any miracles when a handful of members of our conference refuse to work together.”
“This “Never Kevin” trick has been done before. Some in the Freedom Caucus ousted John Boehner using the same “Vacate the Chair” rule that’s being demanded now. That’s how we got Paul Ryan as Speaker,” said Greene.
“The “Never Kevin Five” are already vacating the chair by refusing to vote for our conference nominee while simultaneously demanding the “Vacate the Chair” rule to remove the Speaker at a later date,” said Greene. “If they are successful, they will give us something worse than Paul Ryan. The truth is they have no plan. It’s an empty promise, which is why I’m speaking out.”

“Let’s start with my dear friend, Matt Gaetz. Many of his attacks against Kevin McCarthy are comparisons to Paul Ryan. It’s quite ironic, given Matt’s very first vote in Congress was for Paul Ryan as Speaker. Even when we all knew Paul Ryan would never deliver the MAGA agenda,” said Greene. “We had full GOP control and President Trump, with pen in hand, ready to sign America First legislation. This Republican failure is why I ran for Congress.”
“All that said, Matt Gaetz, is one of my favorite members of Congress. America needs his talent and intelligence to work alongside Jim Jordan on investigations for the Judiciary Committee, not blow things up before we begin,” said Greene.
