A stationary front and low-pressure system are stirring up the northern Gulf of Mexico, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to worsen as a cold front reinforces the system today, increasing winds across the northwestern, west-central, and southwestern Gulf.

Gale warnings are in effect for frequent gusts in the northwestern and west-central Gulf through Sunday morning, and sustained winds offshore Veracruz, Mexico, through at least Sunday night. Mariners should expect very large seas building through early next week.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave entering the Bay of Campeche today could develop into a low-pressure system interacting with the frontal boundary. There’s a medium chance this system could form a tropical depression early to mid-next week as it slowly moves northwestward over the southwestern Gulf.

Areas southeast of these weather systems will experience mostly gentle to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas.
