CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – The Citrus County School District’s Marine Science Station, a beloved educational hub, is set to reopen its doors to students in January 2025.
The station, located across the Fort Island Trail Bridge from the Academy of Environmental Science, has been a cornerstone of the district’s educational offerings since 1967. It provides students with invaluable hands-on experiences in marine science and ecology.
Hurricane Helene, which struck the area on September 26, 2024, caused significant damage to the station. The 8-foot storm surge inundated the facility, impacting its buildings, boats, docks, and other infrastructure.

Despite the devastation, the school district, along with dedicated staff and contractors, has worked tirelessly to restore the station to a safe and functional state. While students will be able to resume field trips in January, extensive repairs and renovations are still underway.
The Marine Science Station remains a valuable asset to the community, offering unique educational opportunities for students. The school district is committed to its future and is exploring options to further enhance the facility.
