MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A 69-year-old man in Marathon, Florida, learned the hard way that “roughing it” doesn’t mean trashing the neighborhood. Abelardo Castro Silva Castro was arrested Friday after authorities discovered his makeshift campsite overflowing with garbage.
Sheriff’s deputies on patrol encountered Castro near his tent on 20th Street. The scene was less of “peaceful retreat” and more “public dump,” with food debris, water bottles, clothes, a mattress, and other refuse spilling onto the street.

Castro was arrested and charged with illegal dumping/littering more than 15 pounds. He was booked into the Monroe County jail, presumably trading his makeshift accommodations for a less scenic, but significantly cleaner, cell.
