Man Dies From Hyperthermia In New Mexico After Crossing US-Mexico Border

A 34-year-old man, whose nationality remains unknown, died from hyperthermia after illegally crossing the US-Mexico border near Deming, New Mexico, on September 25, 2024.

According to a statement released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Border Patrol agents responded to a sensor activation and encountered a group of undocumented individuals who informed them that another man was in medical distress.

Agents located the man, who was unable to stand and requested water. They immediately called for emergency medical services and provided aid to the man, attempting to cool him down.

EMS personnel arrived and continued to treat the man for hyperthermia, but he went into cardiac arrest while being transported to a landing zone for air evacuation. Despite life-saving efforts by EMS and a Border Patrol paramedic, the man was pronounced dead at Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming.

An autopsy conducted by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed hyperthermia as the cause of death, classifying the manner of death as an accident.

CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident, and the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General has been notified.
