Law enforcement officials arrested 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick on a federal charge of possessing a machine gun following a deadly shooting at a Tuskegee University homecoming after-party.
The early Sunday morning incident left one person dead and 16 others injured, 12 of whom suffered gunshot wounds. The deceased victim, identified as 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson, was not a student at the university.
Authorities are still investigating the details of the shooting, and no arrests have been made in connection with Johnson’s death or the other injuries. However, officers reportedly found Myrick leaving the party with a handgun that could be converted into a machine gun.

Tuskegee University, celebrating its 100th Homecoming Week, responded to the tragedy by canceling classes on Monday and Tuesday. New safety protocols are also being implemented for students.
The university acknowledged the “exceptional Homecoming weekend” that was marred by the shooting. They urged students to seek help and emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.
