A man arrested at the U.S. Capitol on Monday with Molotov cocktails allegedly intended to assassinate Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other prominent Republicans, according to a newly released affidavit.

Ryan Michael “Reily” English, who turned himself in to police, reportedly told authorities he traveled to Washington, D.C., with the goal of killing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson. He allegedly changed his target to Bessent after learning of the Secretary’s confirmation vote in the Senate, the affidavit states. English reportedly considered Hegseth a “Nazi.”

A note found in English’s pocket suggests a political motive behind his alleged plans. The note, addressed to someone named Judith, expresses remorse for his actions but states he “can’t do nothing while nazis kill my sisters.” It also says, “Fuck them for pushing us so far. you dont deserve this. Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying. Please survive.”

Investigators also believe English may have considered targeting the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank near the Capitol, potentially with arson, according to the affidavit.

English allegedly planned to throw a Molotov cocktail at or near Bessent’s feet and stab him if he could get close enough, the affidavit details. He was carrying two Molotov cocktails made from vodka bottles at the time of his arrest and claimed to have more in his vehicle.

English is charged with Unlawful Receipt, Possession, and/or Transfer of a Firearm and Carrying a Firearm, Dangerous Weapon, Explosive, or Incendiary Device on the Grounds of the Capitol.

Bessent’s confirmation hearing concluded several hours after English’s arrest. The Senate subsequently confirmed Bessent’s appointment.
