A major city in Florida has joined more than a dozen U.S. cities in an international environmental movement to ban consumption of meat and dairy products as well as new car purchases by 2030.

According to The Federalist, Miami has joined a global environmental coalition known as the “C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group” which has embraced those goals and others in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The effort is led and mostly funded by Democratic billionaire Michael Bloomberg.

In explaining its rationale, the C40 group, in a report entitled “The Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5°C World,” notes, “Cities drive the global economy, and urban decisions have an impact well beyond city boundaries. In this case, the impact we are considering is the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from urban consumption of building materials, food, clothing & textiles, private transport, electronics & household appliances, as well as private aviation travel.”

The Federalist noted that Bloomberg has recruited almost 100 cities around the world.

Besides Miami, the list of U.S. cities includes the usual left-wing suspects: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Seattle.

Bloomberg’s movement is already underway, The Federalist argued. For example, according to its article, New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently announced that the Big Apple will cap the amount of meat and dairy served by city institutions, such as schools and jails.

In addition to cutting use of meat, dairy and private cars, the group also seeks goals such as limiting people to buying three new articles of clothing a year, and limiting air travel to one flight of under 1,000 miles every three years.

The Federalist noted that liberal “fact-checkers” are already running interference for the Bloomberg group, claiming its stated ideas are not policy recommendations, but merely “ambitious targets” — which to many would seem a distinction without a difference.

In the conclusion of its report, the Bloomberg group notes, “C40 cities are at the frontline of climate action. … The changes to current consumption patterns that need to be delivered in cities are in some cases dramatic, but individuals, businesses and city governments all stand to gain if the changes are delivered in a just way.”
