Applications for unemployment benefits in Florida remain low. The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 5,545 first-time jobless claims were filed last week in the state, down from 6,249 during the week that ended Aug. 5.
The numbers show little change since the start of the year, indicating a tight market for workers. Over the past four weeks, the state has averaged 6,145 initial claims.
Since the start of the year, the state has averaged 5,869 a week. During the first six months of the year, the state’s unemployment rate held at 2.6 percent.

The Florida Department of Commerce will issue July numbers on Friday.
Nationally, an estimated 239,000 jobless claims were filed last week, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week.
The Department of Labor said this month that the national unemployment rate for July was 3.5 percent, with the labor-force participation rate the highest since March 2020.
