In the wake of the deadly New Year’s terror attack in New Orleans, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy addressed the tragedy, offering condolences, demanding accountability, and urging transparency from federal authorities.

Speaking to the press, Kennedy reflected on the senseless violence that claimed the lives of 10 and injured dozens more on Bourbon Street early New Year’s Day.

“I wish I understood better why bad things happen to good people,” Kennedy said. “For those people who don’t believe in objective evil, all you have to do is look at what happened in our city early this morning.”

Kennedy emphasized his commitment to ensuring that federal authorities handle the investigation thoroughly and truthfully.

“The federal government is now in charge of this investigation,” he stated, referring to the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Justice. “I told the Secretary of Homeland Security, with all the respect I could muster, that we expect the full force and resources of the federal government behind this investigation.”

Kennedy praised local law enforcement, including state troopers, police departments, and sheriffs, for their swift response and cooperation with federal authorities. However, he stressed the need for the investigation to not only capture those responsible but also provide transparency to the public.

“Catch these people. And then tell the American people the truth,” Kennedy demanded. “After we get to the bottom of this, they need to tell the American people, the people of New Orleans, and the people of America the truth.”

Kennedy also supported the decision to postpone the Sugar Bowl, a major event scheduled in New Orleans, by 24 hours.

“There’s just too much stuff we don’t know,” Kennedy said. “It’s just not worth it.”

Kennedy concluded his remarks with a strong promise to hold federal authorities accountable if transparency falters.

“When it is appropriate, and this investigation is complete, you will find out what happened and who was responsible,” Kennedy vowed. “Or I will raise fresh hell and chase those in the federal government responsible for telling us what happened like they stole Christmas.”
