Joe Biden will speak to the public on the situation in Ukraine and Russia at 1 pm ET. on Tuesday.
The president’s remarks come after Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would move troops into eastern Ukraine, following the Kremlin’s recognition of the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Luhansk.
The Biden administration is now calling Russia’s movement of troops into eastern Ukraine on Monday as “an invasion,” moves that President Biden has said would trigger significant sanctions against Moscow.
“President Biden has spoken to the fact that if a Russian tank or a Russian troop moves across the border, that’s an invasion,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Feb. 6.
Deputy national security adviser Jon Finer told NBC that Russia had crossed that line and, Biden would announce new sanctions against Russia in the coming hours.
Finer said Russia’s actions are “the beginning of the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine” in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday he still believes “there will be no war” with Russia, despite Moscow sending troops into Ukraine’s breakaway regions.
“With regards to being on a military footing, we understand there will be no war,” Zelensky said, CNN reported. “There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing.”
