Bilingual Art: Fun with Faces – Painting with Color Pencils
Using a subject inspired by arts and culture, participants learn to create a painterly effect with colored pencils to craft expressive portraits. Participants are provided with a template of the subject, colored pencils, and blending gel for in-class use, and a sheet protector for their completed portraits. The class includes a live, step-by-step demo and will be presented in both English and Spanish. Recommended for adults. Registration is recommended. Read for the Record: With Lots of Love
Join the library staff as they participate in “Read for the Record,” where people in communities all over the world read the same book on the same day to celebrate and support early literacy. This mini-story time features this year’s title, With Lots of Love, along with fun songs and activities the whole family can enjoy. For children ages 2 to 7 years and their parents/caregivers. The program capacity is 20 children. Tickets will be available at the marked service desk 15 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served bases. One ticket per child and parent/caregiver. Founding Figures of Ybor City: Ybor & Manrara

In 1886, Vicente Martínez Ybor, a Spanish cigar factory owner, moved his business from Cuba to Key West and later to the sleepy little village of Tampa. By his side was a young Cuban financier, Eduardo Manrara, who became a trusted member of Ybor’s firm. Learn how Ybor, the established Spanish industrialist, and the young Manrara combined their instincts, genius, and unique vision to build a thriving cigar industry in Tampa. By 1900, the result was a flourishing section of Tampa called Ybor City, which became “The Cigar Capital of the World.” Presented by the Tampa Bay History Center. Recommended for adults. NASA Solar System Ambassador Talk: Destination Moon

In November 2022, Artemis I, an uncrewed mission, went on a fly-by of the moon. In 2024, Artemis II will bring the first humans since the Apollo program on another lunar fly-by, and the mission crew includes the first woman, person of color, and non-American. Join Solar System Ambassador (and author) Cecil Castellucci as she introduces visitors to the Artemis Mission. Recommended for kids ages 6 to 12. Registration recommended. Children’s Theatre: The Case of the Missing Fables
The original play inspired by Aesop’s Fables is best for ages 4 and up. During October, there will be three performances at library branches around the county. Visit HCPLC.org/ChildrensTheatre for more information. “The Case of the Missing Fables” is presented by Creative Arts Theatre Company, the City of Tampa’s professional theatre company for young audiences.
The Burgert Brothers: Photographers, Historians
Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

The five Burgert brothers were professional photographers in Tampa from the 1890s through the 1960s. They took shots of homes, people, events, and commercial businesses, and without knowing it, left a record of historical importance. Recommended for adults. 9th Annual Family Heritage Festival

Celebrate the 9th Annual Family Heritage Festival with library staff and genealogy experts. Visitors can explore the many resources available to research their family histories and learn how to properly preserve family photographs. Plus, learn more about the Burgert Brothers Photographic Collection and the Florida Memory Project. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the John F. Germany Library.
