Unable to convince Florida voters last year of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ alleged “authoritarian” tendencies, leftists in the Sunshine State seek action from a higher power:

The United Nations.

According to the Florida Standard on Wednesday, five “disgruntled leftists” from Florida will present a report next week called “A Shadow Over the Sunshine State.” Their audience: the UN’s Human Rights Committee, located in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Since early 2019, Florida has turned into a laboratory for authoritarian experiments that should sound the alarm bells at the state, national and international levels,” the report opens, according to the Standard.

“They threaten democracy in Florida and have served as models for similarly repressive, anti-democratic projects in other states.”

Under DeSantis, they add, “Florida has lamentably become the model for authoritarian tactics that undermine multiple rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”

“Most notably, perhaps, Governor DeSantis has executed a calculated attack on freedom of expression, assembly and association, targeting social movements led by Black, immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities, dissenters and even private businesses that speak out against his administration’s policies,” the report continues.

The evidence for this can be found in the following “authoritarian laws” enacted by DeSantis:

  • The Combating Public Disorder Act, which was inspired by Black Lives Matter riots in 2020, and which boosted punishment for crimes committed during a riot and offered additional protections for police officers and victims of mob violence.
  • The Stop WOKE Act, which bans Critical Race Theory and prohibits discriminatory concepts rooted in anti-white racism.
  • The Parental Rights in Education Act, which prohibits school districts and classroom teachers from implementing lesson plans based on sexual orientation or gender ideology.
  • The state’s new immigration law that requires businesses with 25 or more employees to use E-Verify, and bans local governments from issuing ID cards to illegal immigrants.

Despite his so-called “authoritarian” practices, DeSantis walloped Democrat Charlie Crist in last year’s gubernatorial election, winning by 20 points.

Moreover, his reforms in Florida have made him the Republican Party’s go-to option in case Donald Trump unexpectedly crashes in next year’s GOP primaries or ends up in jail.

The UN’s Human Rights Committee invited the DeSantis haters to Geneva to speak. It’s unclear what the UN may do after that.
