After reports that the federal government essentially tortured dogs for scientific research, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is working to ensure test subjects from the animal kingdom can be retired to good homes.

The White Coat Waste Project, or WCW, a watchdog group for animals within the scientific research community, announced Thursday that “Violet’s Law” had been introduced in Congress.

The bill would force federal labs to make adoption of experimental animals an option once the research is concluded.

Currently, according to WCW, government researchers simply kill the animals as a matter of convenience. In any given year, federal labs house more than 40,000 animals.

WCW asserts that more than 70% of Republicans and Demcorats support making the animals available for adoption once scientific trials are concluded.

Violet was a coonhound rescued by from a lab in Washington, D.C., by Julie Germany, a former volunteer at the facility who later became WCW’s executive director.

Violet’s Law is sponsored by Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, and Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Gary Peters, D-Mich.

“Taxpayers ‘bought’ the dogs, cats, and other animals locked in government laboratories, and we want Uncle Sam to #GiveThemBack,” Desiree Bender, WCW’s campaign manager, said in a statement.

“Tens of thousands of regulated animals are abused in wasteful government experiments each year, and taxpayer-funded white coats callously kill most of them at the end of testing, even when they’re perfectly healthy,” Bender added. “Violet’s Law would change that.”

Bender noted that in recent years WCW has helped secure the retirement of dogs, cats, rabbits, primates, and other animals from government labs and jump-started lab-animal retirement policies at the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Food & Drug Administration.

“Adoption should be an option in all federal animal labs, and nearly three-quarters of taxpayers agree,” Bender noted. “We applaud Sens. Collins and Peters and Rep. Mace for introducing Violet’s Law and their outstanding efforts to give animals a second chance when government experiments end.”

In a statement, Mace noted, “It’s cruel and unnecessary to euthanize dogs, cats, and other animals in federal research labs which are healthy enough to be adopted out and live happy lives.”

“We are leading this commonsense, bipartisan effort to ensure that federal agencies can retire and re-home animals no longer needed in taxpayer-funded research whenever possible.”

One target of WCW’s work has been Dr. Anthony Fauci, as The Free Press has reported.

The group targeted Fauci for his work on animals, but especially beagles, which in one series of experiments were allowed to be attacked by sand flies but had their vocal cords cut so researchers did not have to listen to their agonizing moans.
