LAKELAND, Fla. – The Lakeland Fire Department proudly announces the promotion of Matt Brown to Assistant Chief of Administration, effective July 28, 2024.
Assistant Chief Brown brings over 25 years of experience in fire service and administration. In his new role, he will oversee managerial and administrative functions, aiding in the planning, organizing, and directing of the Fire Department’s Administrative division.
Fire Chief Doug Riley expressed confidence in Brown’s capabilities, stating, “Matt’s extensive experience and dedication make him an excellent fit for this position. We are thrilled to welcome him to our executive leadership team and are optimistic about the positive impact he will have on our department and the community we serve.”
Matt Brown’s career with the Lakeland Fire Department began in 1999. He served as a firefighter until 2005, when he was promoted to Lieutenant. In 2016, he became the department’s first Training Captain, and in 2022, he was promoted to Training Chief. Brown has also coordinated the department’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and SWAT Paramedic teams.
His certifications include Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor III, Live Fire Instructor I, State Pump Operator, and Paramedic. Brown is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Managing Fire Officer (MFO) Program and the Florida Fire Chief’s Association Emergency Services Leadership Institution (ESLI). He serves on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1006 and NFPA 1021 committees and leads the Work Group for State Technical Rescue Teams.

Beyond his professional commitments, Chief Brown is an active community member. He participates in the Lakeland Rotary Club and is a graduate of the Lakeland Leadership Class XXXIII. He has received multiple Firefighter of the Year awards for his heroic off-duty actions and community service, including the prestigious American Legion National Firefighter of the Year award in 2016.
