Lakeland Bicyclist Arrested After Attempting To Elude Deputies

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A 41-year-old Lakeland man was arrested Wednesday evening after attempting to flee from a traffic stop while riding a bicycle, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

The PCSO reported that the incident occurred at approximately 8:51 PM when a deputy observed Christopher William Sodt commit a traffic violation while bicycling at the intersection of West Parker Street and Grady Lane in Lakeland.

The deputy attempted to stop Sodt, but he allegedly fled by pedaling faster.

During the pursuit, Sodt reportedly dismounted the bicycle and attempted to flee on foot.

Despite his efforts, deputies apprehended Sodt. However, he allegedly resisted arrest, kicking a deputy and attempting to flee again. Sodt was eventually taken into custody.

The PCSO noted that Sodt has an extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for burglary, vehicle theft, trafficking in stolen property, retail theft, counterfeiting, fraud, and narcotics. He has reportedly served a total of 11.5 years in prison over three separate incarcerations.

Christopher William Sodt was charged with:

  • Fleeing to elude
  • Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)
  • Resisting arrest with violence
