POLK COUNTY, Fla – A 32-year-old Lake Placid woman lost her life in a two-vehicle collision on State Road 60 West near Lake Wales Friday night. Four others involved in the crash were treated and released at the scene.

The accident occurred around 8:19 p.m. on August 2nd, approximately four miles west of US 27. According to Polk County Sheriff’s Office investigators, Nakeyma Williams was driving a Toyota Camry westbound on SR 60 when her vehicle veered off the road, crossed the median, and struck a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling eastbound.

The driver of the pickup truck, 51-year-old Leo Cowder, III of Lake Wales, along with his three adult passengers and two children, sustained minor injuries. All occupants of the Dodge were wearing seatbelts.

Williams, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with no initial indication that Williams attempted to brake before impact.

SR 60 West was closed for approximately five hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.
