Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona will not run for reelection in 2024, according to a video message she posted on X Tuesday.
“Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year,” Sinema said in a video posted on X.
In her video, Sinema said partisan warfare is, in part, the reason for her decision.
“Compromise is a dirty word. We’ve arrived at that crossroad, and we chose anger and division. I believe in my approach, but it’s not what America wants right now,” Sinema said.
“As we look ahead, Arizona is at a crossroads. Protecting abortion access, tackling housing affordability, securing our water supply, defending our democracy — all of this and more is on the line,” he said in a statement. “I welcome all Arizonans, including Senator Sinema, to join me in that mission.”
Sinema was elected to the Senate in 2018 as a Democrat but left the party after the 2022 midterm elections.
Alongside Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who is also retiring, she has taken a moderate position in the body and often voted against Democratic priorities, such as exceptions to the filibuster.
