Key Largo Man Arrested For Attacking And Injuring Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A Key Largo man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies after attacking a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy, attempting to seize his firearm, and stabbing him in the face.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon when deputies responded to a call on County Road 905. The call reported a man, later identified as 58-year-old David Ray Wyrick, placing boulders in the roadway and tampering with fire hydrants.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Wyrick brandishing a pocketknife. He resisted arrest, and despite being tased, continued to struggle with officers. During the altercation, Wyrick struck Sergeant Robert Dosh in the face with a metal pipe, injuring his eye. Wyrick also attempted to grab Sgt. Dosh’s firearm and the firearm of another deputy, but he did not gain control of either weapon.

Sgt. Dosh was transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and later to Kendall Medical Center in Miami due to the severity of his eye injury.

Wyrick was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted Manslaughter
  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Resisting Arrest with Violence

“I am grateful the serious injuries to Sgt. Robert Dosh do not appear to be life-threatening, and that this suspect is in jail,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “This incident is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face each and every day they put on their uniform.”
