U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) brought an amendment to the budget resolution to a vote on Friday, proposing a limited, 3-month extension as an alternative to a $5 trillion debt limit increase. However, the amendment was defeated by a vote of 5-94.
Senator Paul’s amendment aimed to give Congress a chance to demonstrate its commitment to reducing spending.
“Washington will borrow $2 trillion this year just to keep the lights on. Handing Congress another $5 trillion blank check ensures nothing changes. If we’re serious about cutting spending, then Congress needs to get serious about returning to fiscal responsibility,” said Dr. Paul.

During his speech on the Senate floor, Dr. Paul drew attention to the nation’s rising debt, which has exceeded $36 trillion. He argued that this level of borrowing is unsustainable and jeopardizes the nation’s economic future.
Senator Paul also criticized what he perceives as hypocrisy in Washington, where many politicians campaign on fiscal responsibility but fail to take meaningful action to address excessive spending. He called for accountability and urged his colleagues to make difficult choices to curb spending.
Paul acknowledged President Trump’s and the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) efforts to promote accountability within government agencies.

However, he stressed that these efforts are insufficient if overall government spending continues to drive the country further into debt. He emphasized that fiscal responsibility must be the primary focus.
“President Trump and DOGE are aggressively finding things to cut, but the Big Spenders in Congress don’t want to make these Cuts permanent if we kick the debt deadline two years down the road, the cuts likely will never happen,” said Paul. “I propose that we cap the debt limit so that we take three months to ensure that the cuts are real, then address the debt limit alongside the new cuts.”
