A nurse in Kentucky has been sentenced to 60 months (five years) in prison for tampering with a consumer product, specifically morphine prescribed to elderly patients under her care.
According to her plea agreement, Abigail Hall, 51, of Lexington, Kentucky, a contract registered nurse, admitted to stealing morphine prescribed for three patients at a Lawrenceburg, Kentucky healthcare facility between January 2023 and August 2023. The facility focused on care for the elderly and infirm, many of whom suffered from significant pain and disease.

On August 27, 2023, Hall replaced the stolen morphine with water and blue food coloring to mimic the actual medication. She stole at least seven syringes of morphine and administered the tampered medication to at least one patient.
Under federal law, Hall will be required to serve 85 percent of her prison sentence. Upon release, she will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for three years.

Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and George A. Scavdis, Special Agent in Charge, FDA Office of Criminal Investigations, Metro Washington Field Office, jointly announced the sentence.
