A district judge in rural Kentucky was tragically shot and killed at the Letcher County courthouse on Thursday, with the local sheriff being charged with his murder.
District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was shot multiple times in his chambers following an argument with Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43. Stines has been charged with first-degree murder and taken into custody.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.” Attorney General Russell Coleman assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and justice will be pursued.
Judge Mullins was known for his dedication to helping those struggling with substance abuse within the justice system and had been instrumental in establishing programs aimed at providing treatment and support.

The Kentucky State Police is investigating the shooting, which they have described as an isolated incident with no further threat to the public.
