Arizona Republican Kari Lake is projected to win her Senate primary on Tuesday, setting up a contest against Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego in one of the key races this fall for control of the chamber.

The two candidates are vying for the seat of retiring Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an independent who caucuses with Democrats.

Lake, endorsed by the Senate Republican campaign arm, is projected to defeat Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb and neuroscientist Elizabeth Reye. Lamb garnered just over 40% of the Republican primary vote Tuesday night, signaling potential challenges for Lake in consolidating the GOP base and appealing to independent voters in the general election. Gallego faced no opposition for the Democratic nomination.

Lake, a former local news anchor who lost the 2022 governor’s race in her first political campaign, is a vocal ally of former President Donald Trump. She is widely known for promoting false claims of widespread election fraud, supporting an audit of the 2020 presidential race, and attempting to overturn her 2022 defeat to Democrat Katie Hobbs.

Gallego, a retired Marine representing a deep-blue Phoenix-area district, began his Senate campaign in early 2023, well before Sinema announced her retirement.

Sinema was elected to the Senate seat in 2018 as a Democrat, the first from the party to win a Senate race in Arizona in 30 years.
