Judge Juan Merchan has postponed the sentencing of former President Donald Trump, pushing the proceedings to September.

This delay comes as the legal landscape surrounding Trump’s case continues to evolve, with the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity adding a new layer of complexity.

On May 30th, 2023, Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts against him in a Manhattan criminal case. The charges were related to the alleged falsification of business records connected to an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Initially, Trump was scheduled to be sentenced on July 11th, just days before the upcoming Republican National Convention.

However, in a significant development, Judge Merchan has now rescheduled the sentencing to September.

In his decision to reschedule the sentencing, Judge Merchan cited the need to address the implications of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling. The judge wrote that he would issue a ruling on September 6th, with the possibility of an additional court date on September 18th if necessary.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office, led by Alvin Bragg, agreed with the two-week delay in sentencing. In a letter, Bragg stated that while the office believes Trump’s arguments to be “without merit,” they do not oppose the request for the adjournment, and they have requested a deadline of July 24th, 2024, to file and serve a response.

If convicted, Trump could face up to four years in jail. However, the judge has the discretion to impose a lighter sentence, such as a few weeks or even probation. The rescheduled sentencing in September will be a critical juncture in determining the former president’s fate.
