George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley warned on Thursday that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is seeking to get Americans to “embrace censorship” on behalf of the left.
Clinton called for Americans to be “criminally charged” for spreading what she viewed as propaganda during a Monday evening interview with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. Turley said Clinton was an “outstanding voice” in the anti-free speech movement, as seen through her actions like seeking to use the European Union to force American tech companies to censor certain views on X.

“I talk about her in my new book, ‘The Indispensable Right,’ and how she’s been one of the outstanding voices in the anti-free speech movement. Her views on free speech are quite chilling,” Turley told “America’s Newsroom” co-host Bill Hemmer. “What’s interesting is that for years, the left has been trying to get people to embrace censorship. But it’s hard to get a free people to give up freedom, and it’s not working. And so now they’re going old school with Clinton and with countries like Brazil.”
A Brazilian supreme court justice ordered internet providers in the country to block access to X after the company refused to censor accounts. Turley said that Clinton went to the European Union after Musk purchased the social media site in November 2022, urging it to use its power to force the site to censor.

“It’s notable when Musk bought Twitter, the first thing that Hillary Clinton seemed to do was to go to Europe and ask the Europeans to use the [Digital Services Act] to censor Americans, to force Musk to silence opposing views in the United States,” Turley told Hemmer. “That’s a former presidential candidate in the United States asking Europeans to apply their censorship laws to silence other Americans.”
Turley also noted that under some of the standards she was pushing to be imposed, Clinton could face legal jeopardy over her campaign’s involvement in the Steele Dossier, which was used to further claims that former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee were fined by the Federal Election Commission for their involvement in the now-discredited dossier, CNN reported.
