Jonathan Turley Says Dems’ Efforts To Stop Trump In Defense Of Democracy Are Actually Threatening Democracy

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said Monday the Democrats are the ones threatening democracy through their efforts to stop President Donald Trump from shrinking the size of the federal government and eliminating wasteful spending.

Congressional Democrats and liberal activists have continued to rage over Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk’s efforts to cut the federal government’s billions of dollars in wasteful spending and carry out mass layoffs to make agencies more efficient.

Turley said the Democrats are attempting to stop Trump from upholding his promises to the American people in the name of democracy, when in actuality, their legal efforts are the true threat to Democratic institutions.

“What’s interesting about the protests of many of these members is that a lot of these voices were the same ones in the name of democracy that wanted to prevent voters from voting for Donald Trump, who ultimately won both houses and a majority of votes,” Turley said. “And now in the name of democracy, they’re arguing they should be able to slowdown or stymy and even prevent some of the things that he ran on. Well, he’s carrying out those campaign pledges. He wants to shrink [the] government, he wants to find fraud. And to do that, he needs to look at the books and I just find any real effort to prevent that likely to be reversed on appeal.”

Democratic lawmakers have uttered violent rhetoric during a Feb. 4 protest as they raged against DOGE’s dismantlement of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) over its billions in wasteful spending on left-wing causes abroad. Fourteen attorneys general filed a lawsuit requesting that DOGE be temporarily blocked over its alleged “limitless and unchecked power” that supposedly stands in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama-appointee, said she planned to issue a ruling on the lawsuit within 24 hours, but appeared inclined to deny the request to block Musk’s agency.

Turley further argued that Trump had long campaigned on these actions that had been promised by many other past presidents, including former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

“What she is seeing and what we’re all seeing is what a president does when they come into office,” Turley said. “Now it’s true that President Trump is being more aggressive, most people run for this office about shrinking government and then forget once they become the government. That’s not the case here. He came in and found [Musk] who is famous for downsizing. He did that at X and they are proceeding along those lines,” Turley said.

In January 2012, Obama announced his administration’s efforts to shrink the size of the federal government by planning to shut down the Small Business Administration and five other trade and business agencies into a single agency, which would have resulted in the reduction of 1,000 to 2,000 jobs. The number of federal employees grew by 123,000 in Obama’s first term, which mainly added staff to homeland security, veterans, defense and justice, according to CNN.

In February 1993, Clinton signed an executive order to reduce 100,000 federal positions by directing every agency with over 100 employees to cut its workforce by at least 4%.
