Podcast host Joe Rogan praised Elon Musk on Monday, saying the billionaire “changed the course of history” by buying Twitter, now known as X, in 2022. Rogan discussed with Musk how social media and government influence had become intertwined before Musk acquired the platform.

In October 2022, Musk finalized a legal battle to become Twitter’s sole owner, swiftly removing top executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and legal head Vijaya Gadde.

During “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan thanked Musk for buying Twitter and expressed concern about the government’s coordination with social media companies, particularly in suppressing stories like the Hunter Biden laptop incident that some believe affected the 2020 election.

“Thank you so much for buying Twitter,” Rogan said. “I’m not exaggerating when I say you changed the course of history. We were headed down a path of unprecedented censorship and narrative control.”

Rogan pointed to actions taken by Twitter in 2020, when 51 former intelligence agents labeled the Hunter Biden laptop story as “Russian disinformation” and social media platforms complied by limiting its spread. “If you didn’t buy [Twitter], we wouldn’t have known that,” Rogan added.

Musk shared his growing concerns before the acquisition, noting that he had become one of the most engaged users on the platform.

“I was very attuned to changes in the system,” Musk explained. “When they de-platformed a sitting president, Trump, that was just insane. He was posting messages asking people to stay calm, and they still banned him. It didn’t make any sense.”

After taking over Twitter, Musk worked with independent journalists, including Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss, and Michael Shellenberger, to publish the “Twitter Files.” The files disclosed that former Twitter executives justified banning Trump by citing the “context surrounding” the former president and his supporters over time.

Following the release of his interview with Musk on Monday evening, Rogan announced on X his endorsement of Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
