Former President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. The Carter Center announced his passing on Sunday, stating he died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.
His death comes more than a year after he entered hospice care and just over a year after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at 96 in November 2023.
“Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the Carter Center said in a statement on the social media platform X. “He was a man of extraordinary faith, compassion, and vision.”
Born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter rose from modest beginnings to the highest office in the land. Before entering politics, he served as a Navy officer and managed his family’s peanut business. He leveraged his business acumen and deep religious faith into a political career that culminated in his election as the 39th president in 1976.
Carter’s presidency was marked by significant achievements, including the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Egypt and Israel, and his commitment to human rights worldwide.
Yet, his administration faced challenges, such as the Iran hostage crisis and economic struggles, which led to his defeat in the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan.
Despite the humbling end to his presidency, Carter redefined what it means to be a former president. He dedicated his post-presidential life to humanitarian causes through The Carter Center, which he founded in 1982.
His work included monitoring elections, eradicating diseases like Guinea worm, and advocating for global peace and human rights.
